Ephemeral wildflowers are the “harbingers of spring” in Southeast Michigan. Not only beautiful hints of the year to come, ephemeral flowers feature several interesting adaptations that allow them to take advantage of the earliest part of the season. We’ll look at some of the common native species, a few non-natives, and a serious invasive. Their adaptations will be explored in depth, as well as their ecological importance in Michigan woodlands and where to find them locally.
